Skips get lifted, swung and tipped multiple times a day on a busy site. Every one of those lifts depends on a single point of connection — the chain or rope securing the skip to the forklift or telehandler. When that connection is worn, frayed, or improvised, it stops being a maintenance issue and becomes a safety and compliance risk.
What’s actually at risk
A damaged retaining chain doesn’t fail gradually — it fails suddenly, usually under load, and usually with no warning. If a skip comes loose mid-lift, the consequences can be severe: for the operator, for anyone working nearby, and for the business responsible for the equipment. It’s one of the simplest, cheapest points of failure on a site — and one of the easiest to prevent.
The legal position
Under UK health and safety law, lifting equipment and lifting accessories are subject to two overlapping sets of regulations:
- LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) classes chains, shackles and hooks as “lifting accessories,” and forklifts and telehandlers as “lifting equipment.” LOLER requires this equipment to be of adequate strength, properly maintained, and thoroughly examined by a competent person.
- PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) places a broader duty on employers to ensure any work equipment — including the skip and its attachments — is suitable for its purpose and kept in efficient working order.
In practice, that means a frayed rope or a damaged chain doesn’t meet the standard either regulation requires. If an incident occurs and the equipment wasn’t fit for purpose, “we knew it needed replacing” is not a defence — it’s evidence of a known risk that wasn’t acted on.
A simple, low-cost fix — no need to replace the skip
The reassuring part is that a worn chain doesn’t mean scrapping an otherwise perfectly good skip. Our Safety Retaining Chain is designed as a direct, like-for-like replacement:
- Fits existing skips across our range — no need to buy a new unit
- Supplied complete with a D-Link shackle and hook
- No specialist tools or training required to fit
- 1m chain length, in stock now and ready to ship
- £39 + VAT
How to fit it
- Remove the current chain — unscrew or cut off the existing D-Link shackle or equivalent.
- Identify the fixing point, line up the new D-Link shackle, and tighten by hand (or with a tool if needed) until secure.
- Clip the hook onto the skip to protect it from damage during transport and use.
The whole process takes minutes and requires no downtime for your fleet.
Keeping equipment compliant across a whole site or fleet
Chains are just one part of a much bigger picture. For businesses juggling checks across multiple skips, forklifts and site equipment, staying on top of maintenance records, inspection dates and compliance documentation is a constant challenge — and one that’s easy to lose track of across a busy operation. That’s exactly the gap our partner platform, CHEKD, is built to close: helping teams log checks, track compliance and stay audit-ready without the paperwork chase. Find out more at chekd.co.uk.
